GB selection is over. Galasport paddlers are in the team!
Great Britain already knows who is going to compete in World and European championship. There have been 3 races on the Olympic course in Lee Valley this weekend that set up GB national team for the year 2014.
The biggest congratulation belongs to Joe Clarke, K1 paddler who became senior and U23 UK champion when he won 3 of 3 races.Joe Clarke had, in winning days one and two, already confirmed his place in the GB senior team (subject to ratification by the International Panel on Monday) and was able to maintain his performance for the third day in a row to beat Huw Swetnam and Richard Hounslow.
“It’s quite hard to pick yourself up after winning two when I knew I’d made the team and I’m top boat,” said Clarke, who finished the senior completion in top spot ahead of Richard Hounslow and Tom Brady. “But my coach Mark (Ratcliffe) said to try and emulate the World Championships in the semi finals and final format, so I went out to enjoy it and try and put down the best performance I could on the day. The course was tricky with two curl moves but Mark set it to challenge all the athletes which it certainly did.”
Clarke first qualified for the senior team a year ago and has had the benefit of the spectacular Lee Valley Whitewater Centre as a full time athlete ever since. Tom Brady become a second UK team member who uses galasport so it's great to have two paddlers in the most hotly category.
We are very happy for Beth Latham who is our Gteam paddler in K1W category who made UK senior team. Her situation has not been very easy this weekend. Fiona Pennie and Lizzie Neave had already secured a win each going into Sunday and, with each having a top three place too, their selection for the senior team was almost guaranteed. But it was Beth Latham who finished the weekend as the third best senior, her consistency bringing a second and two third places.
“I’m very relieved that it’s now over,” said Latham afterwards. “I’ve had some up and down performances this weekend and it didn’t always go as well as I’d wanted but at end of the weekend I got the result I needed. “I guess I was consistent but I’m always looking to improve so I’ll take those improvements forwards and I’m very excited for the races that are ahead.”
Big congratulation belongs to Mallory Franklin who left everybody behind when winning the C1W category on our new test boat POP. We wanted to make stable and easy boat that would be great for paddlers even on very difficult courses and we are happy that Mallory assured us we had done a good job.
This year we finally have C2 crew in team thanks to Matt Lister and Rhys Davies paddling our C2 boat the Wanted. This is great for Galasport since we are struggling to show that our C2 models are as good as K1 or C1 ones. We are really happy about GB selection's result and we wish all best to all G paddlers in season 2014.
